Russia continues sending components to the International ITER Organization
Two more kits of components for the international thermonuclear experimental reactor produced by Russian industries have been shipped to Europe. The scope of delivery includes the components of the reactor’s power supply system and the superconductors for ITER magnetic system.

At the moment the Efremov Institute specialists, within the scope of Russian responsibility, carry on with manufacturing and testing of the PF 1 coil double pancake at the premises of the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard, St. Petersburg. PF 1 coil, along with five other coils, will create poloidal magnetic field for plasma confinement. It will consist of eight double pancakes.

Project Center ITER  – Within 11-15 May 2015 gyrotron complex prototype – unique equipment for current drive and plasma heating – underwent Facility Acceptance Test (FAT) at premises of GYCOM Ltd. (Nizhny Novgorod) in attendance of ITER Organization representatives. The test’s positive results give green light to gyrotrons serial production for ITER. The system has been developed in cooperation of ITER Russia, IAP RAS, GYCOM Ltd., Kurchatov Institute and CJSC RTSoft

Project Center ITER, Moscow (15 December 2014) – Last week specialists of the Efremov Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus successfully tested prototype of resistors module, designed for rapid discharge of energy stored in the coils of the ITER magnetic system. Tests results demonstrated complete conformance to the IO technical requirements.

Project Center ITER, Moscow (December 03 2014) – December 03 2014 specialists of JSC “ChMP”, which is a part of “TVEL” Fuel Company, made shipment of the last batch of superconducting strands for the ITER magnetic system. With this, the mission of Chepetsk Mechanical Plant (Udmurtia) in implementation of the International ITER Project is successfully completed. The batch of conductors shall soon arrive at the JSC All-Russian Research and Development Institute for Cable Industry (VNIIKP), where cabling of cables for toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields will be carried out.

At the 2014 summer-fall border the Russian and European enterprises, involved into tight cooperation within the ITER project, came to next accomplishment in providing the facility’s magnet system with PF conductor – August 05 and September 03 two first lengths of PF cable previously manufactured in the Russian Federation underwent phases of jacketing and compaction be the Italian company Cryotech.

Early in July this year the joint European-Russian production of superconductor for the ITER poloidal field (PF) coils passed another important milestone. The first qualification sample of the PF coil conductor was successfully tested of the Sultan facility in CRPP, Switzerland. Earlier, within the close international cooperation, the facility was used only for testing specially manufactured short cut for qualification of superconducting cable, but now it was the time for the conductor itself. The sample that was exposed to tests had been cut from 720-meter production length of conductor designed for the PF6 coil.

ITER will be one of the largest facilities, ever constructed by mankind on the Earth. The Tokamak complex is going to weight some 360 thousand tons and be 60 meter high. Amazing, but the operation of this giant can hardly be completely successful without such tiny elements like, for instance, diamond detectors. These small-size components, 4 mm long and wide and only half-mm thick, appear to be most important part of the Vertical neutron camera (VNC) – one of the ITER neutron diagnostics.

It’s common knowledge that close international collaboration is one of the key characteristics of the ITER Project and thus, responsibilities within the Project are broadly distributed among its participating members. Early in February 2013 Italian company CHRYOTEC completed manufacturing of the first copper dummy conductor for PF1 coil using the cable previously manufactured in Russia. These works are being carried out by the firm from Chivasso within the framework of the bilateral agreement concluded between the European and Russian ITER Domestic Agencies.

In 2011 JSC “ChMP” (Glazov, Udmurtia), Russia’s main supplier of superconducting materials for ITER, reached industrial production level. It took the Plant only five years to pass the way from installation of infrastructure on the facility to this milestone.
