Prototype of the ITER Switching Network Unit successfully tested in the Efremov Institute

Series of tests of the Switching Network Unit (SNU) prototype for the ITER coil power supply systems, within the scope of Russian obligations, successfully conducted at the Efremov Institute in St. Petersburg.

Type tests of the prototype of the SNU forming part of the ITER magnet coil power supply systems were carried out in St. Petersburg April 2-6, 2018. This is a highly complicated system that contains mechanical switches, designed for continuous current up to 45 kA, thyristor circuit breakers and a two-stage counterpulse current battery that provides arc-free current transfer from mechanical device circuit to energy-absorbing resistor.
Within five days, the above equipment underwent various tests; most noticeable among them are current commutation tests at the rated current. The obtained results demonstrated full compliance with the ITER Organization technical requirements.
Dr. Francesco Milani, who witnessed the tests from the IO side, stressed that “the Switching Networks are fundamental system for ITER, because they start the plasma current. I think it was successful work; we completed the test program we had in mind. Definitely, it’s an important milestone for the Russian DA and for the Efremov Institute which is the main supplier of this Procurement Arrangement”. Dr. Milani has also highly evaluated qualification of the Russian specialists involved into these works. The Efremov Institute – they have an excellent team. They have demonstrated not only today, but also in the past years, that they have very good skills and very good will. I think I am lucky that I found the way to set up collaboration with them, said Dr. Milani.
Manufacture and supply of switching equipment, busbars and energy absorbing resistors for power supply and protection of the superconducting magnetic system of the ITER reactor is the most expensive and one of the most complicated of the 25 systems falling within the scope of Russias responsibility. The procurement Arrangement was signed in 2011. According the current schedule, procurement of the systems components must be completed by 2023.
